Prayagraj Among Worst-Hit Areas as Massive Storm System Wreaks Havoc Across State

At least 89 people lost their lives after severe storms, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and lightning strikes swept across multiple districts of Uttar Pradesh, causing widespread destruction, uprooting trees and electric poles, and damaging homes and infrastructure.

According to the state Relief Commissioner’s office, the extreme weather event also left at least 53 people injured, caused the death of 114 livestock animals, and damaged dozens of houses across affected regions.

The devastating weather system impacted several districts including Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Kanpur Dehat, Deoria, and Sonbhadra, with Prayagraj emerging as one of the worst-hit areas.

The tragedy has triggered an extensive emergency response operation as authorities rush relief measures to affected families.

CM Yogi Adityanath Orders Immediate Relief Measures

Following the large-scale destruction, Yogi Adityanath directed officials across the state to ensure rapid relief and compensation for affected families.

The Chief Minister instructed:

• District magistrates
• Revenue officials
• Disaster management authorities

to verify all incidents “with full sensitivity” and ensure financial assistance reaches affected families within 24 hours.

Authorities were also asked to establish direct communication with victims and provide all necessary support, including emergency shelter, medical aid, and restoration services.

The state government said it is continuously monitoring the situation through direct coordination with district administrations.

Prayagraj Reports Highest Casualties

Prayagraj witnessed some of the highest casualties due to the storm system.

According to district administration data:

• Seven deaths were reported in Handia
• Four deaths in Phulpur
• Three deaths in Soraon
• Two deaths in Meja
• One death in Sadar

The combination of powerful winds, collapsing structures, lightning strikes, and heavy rainfall caused extensive destruction in both urban and rural areas.

Officials said emergency teams continue assessing damage across the district.

Bhadohi and Fatehpur Also Suffer Heavy Losses

In Bhadohi district, at least 16 people reportedly died in storm-related incidents.

Authorities stated that:

• Trees and electric poles were uprooted
• Multiple houses suffered structural damage
• Transportation and electricity services were disrupted

Meanwhile, in Fatehpur district:

• Nine people lost their lives
• Sixteen others were injured

Officials confirmed that eight deaths occurred in Khaga tehsil, while another woman died after a wall collapse in Sadar tehsil.

Lightning strikes emerged as one of the deadliest aspects of the storm system across several districts.

In Kanpur Dehat:

• A 19-year-old woman died after being struck by lightning while standing under a tree during heavy rainfall
• Several goats also died in the incident
• Another elderly man sustained injuries

In Deoria:

• Two separate lightning strike incidents claimed multiple lives
• Several residents were injured during thunderstorms

Officials warned residents to avoid open fields and shelter under concrete structures during lightning activity.

Several deaths were caused by collapsing walls, sheds, and uprooted trees due to intense winds and rainfall.

In Pratapgarh district:

• Four people died in separate incidents involving wall collapses and falling structures

In Sonbhadra:

• A man died after being trapped beneath a tree uprooted during the storm

Strong winds reportedly caused widespread structural damage across vulnerable rural and semi-urban regions.

Disaster response teams are currently surveying damaged homes and public infrastructure.

Apart from human casualties, the storm caused major losses to livestock and property in agricultural regions.

According to official figures:

• At least 87 houses sustained damage
